Downhill is the glamour event of skiing. Speeds reach 90 mph, and racers have to negotiate turns, jumps, compressions (where the G-forces squash them downwards) and fast straight schusses, all over a two-mile course.
Gates are placed trategically throughout the couurse to reduce the speed of the skiers. Safety nets or padding must be erected along the most dangerous stretches.
